    Tattoo Removal Singapore

    tattoo removal clinic singapore

Did you know that one in four people who get inked regret their decision? If you are the one out of the four, there is hope yet. There are many reasons people come to us to remove or lighten their tattoos; a rash decision made in youth; changes in lifestyle or beliefs, or to refresh it with a new design. Regardless of your purpose, Dr Kevin Chua Medical & Aesthetics are committed to supporting you in the fresh start that you desire. Let us support you along this journey.

We specialise in safe and effective laser tattoo removal techniques at our clinic based in Singapore. These techniques involve breaking down ink particles with a high intensity light beam, so the body can eventually eradicate the broken down residue. These procedures will lighten and remove the tattoo, with black colour pigments the easiest to treat as it can absorb all laser wavelengths.

    Treatment Methods Available

At Dr Kevin Chua Medical & Aesthetics, we constantly update ourselves with state of the art technologies available in the industry, so as to provide a great experience for our clients. Our primary concerns are the functionality, duration and of course the level of discomfort of the procedure.

Currently, our clinic has these two laser technologies available: The PicoWay and MedLite C6 System.

    PicoWay

The PicoWay Laser technology is manufactured by Syneron-Candela, the global leader in producing aesthetic devices

    How It Works

Research shows that the shorter the pulse duration, the higher the efficiency in converting laser energy into the mechanical stress needed to fracture particles into small fragments. The smaller the fragment, the easier it is for the body to effectively remove the tattoo. PicoWay is so named because of its ultra-short pulse durations, a picosecond (one trillionth of a second); 100 times shorter than Q-switch.

PicoWay’s proprietary technology has the most peak power and shortest pulse duration of any picosecond device on the market. It also covers a wider range of spot sizes and treats recalcitrant tattoos, which have been proven to be resistant to nanosecond laser treatment.

PicoWay technology targets all colours, including blue and green, the most difficult colours to remove.  We are proud to provide this technology for our clients. The Resolve™dual wavelength picosecond fractional module also treats skin irregularities, signs of aging, acne scars, as well as pigmented lesions. Pigmented lesions that can be treated include: Nevus of Ota, Laser Skin Toning, Solar or Senile Lentigines, Beckers Nevus, Freckles (Ephelides), Café au lait.

The technology is applicable for all skin types and includes three wavelengths: 532nm, 785nm and 1064nm picosecond laser, with both non-fractional & fractional capabilities. These three different wavelength options mean that we can now target pigmented lesions and all tattoo types and colours. Ideally, the wavelength should be highly absorbed by the pigment and other chromophores in the skin should have little to no absorption of light within the selected wavelength.

    What you can expect

Choosing this technology means you require fewer treatment sessions, and more importantly, have to go through less discomfort. With minimal risk, we can achieve fast results for various skin types.

    MedLite C6

The MedLite C6 is a gold standard Q-switch system for effective laser tattoo removal.

    How it works

The MedLite C6 system focuses energy into the targeted ink molecules at an extremely high rate, until the ink molecules vibrate and shatter. The surrounding skin will not be harmed or damaged. Safety and efficiency are the basis for how this technology operates.

    What you can expect

The MedLite C6 will significantly lighten or remove professional, amateur, traumatic or surgical tattoos. Extendable wavelengths makes it possible for a full colour tattoo removal. It will fade more than 95% the tattoo, depending on the depth of ink in the skin and the amount and type of ink used.

    PicoWay or MedLite C6?

Both technologies have their strengths and weaknesses. To better address your concern on which type of treatment you should opt for, contacting us via phone or email will provide you with the best solution.

    Procedural Costs

We believe that you deserve to make choices for your own body, and also to reverse them. We also understand that there may be instances where you are pressed to remove your tattoo, but cost is of great concern. Read on to find out more about our charges.

    Treatment sessions necessary

The procedure for the whole tattoo to be removed may take up to two to 12 sessions, depending on factors like skin type, location, colour, amount of ink, etc. Typically, amateur tattoos will require two to four treatments or more; professional tattoos will require six to 10 or more. The inks will lighten and fade after each session.

    Duration of each appointment

The length of each session should only take a few minutes, but it is contingent on the size and number of colours the tattoo has. For us to better advise you, please contact us.

    Interval between sessions

The interval between each session are spaced between four to six weeks. This is dependent on factors like skin type, location, colour, amount of ink, etc. We would much prefer to conclude your tattoo laser removal experience as soon as possible, but we have to let your body adjust and remove the fragmented ink pigments. This requires your body’s own biological processes and cannot be rushed. Due to this holdback, we would suggest that you begin treatment early.

Pre and Post Laser Tattoo Removal Treatment Care

    Pre-Treatment Care

    • Completely clean the skin and shave the area 24 hours before the laser tattoo removal treatment
    • Keep the treatment area protected and avoid sun exposure as much as possible for at least 2-3 weeks before the procedure
    • Do not use products that can cause photosensitivity such as salicylic acid, retinols or benzoyl peroxide
    • Remove any lotion, oils, makeup or creams on the tattoo area

    Post-Treatment Care

    • Avoid infection by keeping the area moist with antibiotic ointments that’s prescribed by doctor
    • Take antihistamines as prescribed to reduce itch and refrain from scratching the treated area

    Results: Faded Ink

Before you embark on this journey, it is important to understand what you are signing up for. However, due to Singapore’s Ministry of Health’s guidelines, we are not allowed to display before and after comparisons on our website. We apologise for this, and invite you to observe the results we have achieved for our clients in our clinic.

    Common Concerns

    Is it safe?

Before your treatment session, you will receive a pair of eye shields to protect your eyes from the laser beams. We will then test your skin’s reaction to determine which is the most potent technology for your skin type and tattoo. Rest assured that the pulses of light from the laser will only be used to target your tattoo pigments on the top layers of your skin.

    Will the procedure hurt?

There will be some discomfort during the procedure, which a few of our patients describe as quick tingling sessions, much like that of a rubber band snapping against their skin. To reduce your level of unease, there will be an air-cooling machine to release continuous streams of extremely cold air during the process, as well as numbing and anaesthesia creams available upon your request. For tattoos that span a bigger area, we also provide oral painkillers. Your comfort is important to us, and these are all options that we will discuss with you prior to your treatment, as we endeavour to ensure that your experience remains as safe and comfortable as possible.

    Will the tattoo completely disappear?

For most of the clients that we have treated, yes. However, we have to emphasise that due to the spectrum of tattoos available in the market now (such as type, depth, colour of ink etc), it is difficult for us to predict how much of the tattoo we can lighten.

Some people choose to fix their tattoo, known as “over-tattooing”, using cover art to hide an undesirable ink. If you have one tattoo on top of an older one, extra laser treatments will likely be necessary as there is a high chance that there is a large amount of ink to remove (ink pigments from both tattoos).

Many tattoo artists encourage customers to have several laser treatments to fade an existing tattoo before covering it with a new one. This will greatly reduce the visibility of the old ink from the new one. We welcome advice from your tattoo artist about the desired degree of lightening, and about the exact elements that should be lightened or eliminated. Generally, you have to let the treated site rest for a month or two after your final laser treatment before getting inked in that area.

    Are there any side effects?

Most of our clients do not report any side effects, but there are a few possible inconveniences you may encounter. Do keep in mind that while these effects are possible, they are few and far between.

    Hyperpigmentation
During your treatment, pulses of different light wavelengths are produced to remove the ink pigments. This may also alter your skin’s natural pigment, also known as melanin. This results in hyperpigmentation, the abundance of colour on the skin at the treated area. This is a harmless condition where the treated area is darker than the surrounding skin. This darkening happens when there is an excess of melanin, a brown pigment that forms deposits in the skin and produces your natural skin colour. If you are concerned about this, there are cosmetic products available to help even out your skin tone. We currently do not have any products, but we are able to recommend you some.

    Hypopigmentation
The reverse may occur on the treated area, where the treatment clears your skin’s natural pigmentation. This is known as hypopigmentation, where the treated area is lighter than your normal skin colour. This condition may take some time before your skin’s pigment appears as it was again.

Based on what we understand from our clients, both hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation tend to be more bearable than the actual tattoo. Unless one knows where to look, the difference will not be obvious.

    Blistering
The treatment process will involve the heating up of ink particles in your skin, which may cause the tiny blood vessels around your tattoo to burst. This will result in superficial blisters that contain both water and pigments. Blisters are an indication that your healing process has begun, although they are not aesthetically pleasing and tender to touch. Take care not burst your blisters, and they should heal completely between three to 14 days.

    Lack of complete pigment removal
As mentioned above, while we have achieved full removal results with most of our clients, there are some other factors that come into play when it comes to removing your tattoo. We will do our best to lighten the ink pigments, if a complete disappearance is not possible.

    Keloids
Keloids are an overgrowth of scar tissues that form around a wound, typically after the wound has healed. Keloid scars, which are areas of raised, thickened skin, can appear three to six months after treatment, but they are extremely rare. With the advances in our treatment technologies, permanent scarring is rare and happens less than 2 per cent of the time. If scarring does occur, it is usually subtle and can be minimised with Vitamin E oil or silicone patches. Be advised that you have to wait for your skin to fully heal before applying any cosmetic products.

To remove the chances of scarring after treatment, you have to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated, get enough sleep and rest, and quit smoking. Taking on these measures will improve your body’s immunity, thereby aiding in your skin repair and enhance the speed in dissolving your pigments.

It is imperative to avoid your treated skin from direct exposure to the sun. UV (ultraviolet) radiation will increase the chances of scarring due to greater sensitivity and harm your skin’s pigmentation.

    Infection
The risk of infection is low, if you abide by our aftercare instructions. This is because tattoo laser removal treatments do not break the surface of your skin. However, if you burst your blisters or scratch the treated area, there is an increased level of infection. If you suspect that you have been infected, contact us immediately.

    What is the downtime?

Most of our clients are able to return to their daily routine (to work, school) on the same day or the next day after their treatment. We will be better able to advise you following your treatment.
